Amsterdam-based DJ and producer LUPE has had a love affair with acid house that stretches back to their childhood. Jack Trax's seminal 1988 compilation Acid House was a Christmas gift from LUPE's parents, and it's clear that the album and its sounds remain a key influence to this day.
You can hear it on the title track on their May The Acid Be With You EP, a stormy acid-techno cut laced with hissing hi-hats, rattling snares and squelchy low end. Cheeky vocal snatches add character as the track ramps up in intensity.
'Hard to Resist' is a woozy early hours track, its high-pitched flutey synths proving the perfect foil for clattering percussion, the murkiest of basslines and the titular vocal loop.
The springy bassline on 'Hope' curls around chiming keys to insistent, hypnotic effect, making for a Latino-esque acid track perfect for revivifying dancefloors.
To close, New York producer Avision turns up the energy on his 'May The Acid Be With You' remix. With teasing stabs and walloping drums he creates builds and drops where they previously didn't exist, then loops the vocal and adds huge chords for extra euphoria.
LUPE's second EP on Sous in as many years is an impressive extension of their dark and sexy sound. Of the release, LUPE says, "I want to go into a zone where acid house, techno, and NYC Ballroom tracks are merged.
