SERIAL KILLAZ
The second the needle hits a Serial Killaz record you know it’s them. Rabble-rousing ragga vocals, bubbling bouncy bass, cut-throat beats, undiluted positive vibes: to have such a distinctive sound in today’s talent-packed game is a rare, rare asset. But with two careers that can be traced back to the earliest stages of rave, what do you expect?
Their back story has been told too many times: do a little research and you’ll find the names Tera and Vital Elements scrawled all over the scene’s history books. Now found scrawling Serial Killaz over the very same pages, the duo quickly established themselves as THE jungle and reggae legends’ remixers of choice since forming in 2005. From Cornell Cambell to Marvellous Cain, Wayne Marshall to Peter Bouncer, Damian Marley to Daddy Freddy, the Serial Killaz back catalogue is steeped in authenticity, joining the dots between classic soundsystem sizzlers, rave culture and the future.
Jungle’s very own Trojan horse; every kilo of their success can be put down to their well-chiselled sound: At a time when artists seem to be trying every genre under the sun, Tera and Vital Elements have stuck rigidly to their dub pistols amassing respect from all corners of the scene… Zane Lowe regularly supports them on his primetime Radio 1 show while Toddla T has requested bespoke productions for his own live show. They’ve had the honour of remixing Nas and Damian Marley’s ‘Land Of Promise’ and, bizarrely, their version of Toddla and Skream’s ‘Streets So Warm’ was so well received it was sync’d to cult sports show Soccer AM!
Naturally their trademark skanks and chubby bass spirit bubbles over from their dubs to their DJ sets. With such a heavy international tour schedule, Tera and Vital Elements are often found DJing on separate continents each weekend. From Canada to Croatia, Boomtown to Outlook, the duo are famed for tearing up the dance… And seldom leave without a repeat booking.
Whether you find them knee deep in studio science, nurturing new jungle badboys on the block such as the Run Tingz Cru or behind the decks, the second you hear them… You’ll know exactly who you’re dealing with.
MOB TACTICS
Ironically, given the fact that they've got “Tactics” in their name, Mob Tactics came about quite by chance.
Mark was producing as The Funktion, and Luke, in his role as label manager for RUN DNB, liked what he heard and signed some of his tracks. It became apparent that Mark and Luke's taste in music was ridiculously similar and, over the course of a few weekends, they decided to get in each others studios and see what happened.
What happened was “Gunjack” & “Stick-up Kid”, two tunes which would go on to be supported by some of the biggest deejays in the business, and become the first Mob Tactics release. That was back in 2010 and, in the intervening years, these two have seemingly never let the momentum drop for a moment.
Early releases on Mob Tactics' own Tactical Recordings label, like “Kansas” and “Fugazi”, established their brand of drum & bass. Complex and technical, but with an irresistible edge of funk aimed straight at the dancefloor, no wonder they quickly caught the ear of the likes of Andy C, DJ Hype, Crissy Criss, and Chase & Status.
Anyone who's witnessed one of their blazing deejay sets anywhere around the globe will testify to the vibes and energy Mob Tactics bring to a dance. And, even since opening up their personal dub collection to the masses with their “Mob Vaults” releases on BandCamp, the amount of firepower they're packing on their USBs shows no sign of diminishing.
So, this is Mob Tactics. Signed and certified by some of the biggest deejays and labels in the scene, we've got a feeling they're just getting started...
DOCUMENT ONE
The Oxford-based production and deejay duo known as Document One have been regular fixtures on the USBs of top selectors and at the top of download charts for the last few years. Already well-established dubstep artists by the time they returned to their first love of drum ‘n’ bass, they’ve brought a dizzying array of influences to the table, fused to make something that’s all their own.
Both members of the team, Joe and Matt, discovered a passion for jungle and drum ‘n’ bass in their teens. Their deepening love for all things bass-heavy led them into the world of dubstep, where they made their mark on huge labels like Buygore and Never Say Die. Millions of YouTube plays and support from influencers like Mistajam, Knife Party, and Crissy Criss took them into the scene’s A list. And high-profile remix work for the likes of Moby, Rob Zombie, and Professor Green cemented their ever-expanding reputation.
Encouragement from Bassline Smith persuaded them to turn their talents to creating drum ‘n’ bass. They’d experimented with the genre over the years, but signing to Technique Recordings in 2015 was where the DnB side of things got serious. And the impact they made was pretty much immediate. A series of releases demonstrated the multiple facets to their sound, drawing on flavours of jazz, hip-hop, funk, techno, and neuro. The constant theme is their songwriter’s ear for musicality and harmonic depth, coupled with rock-solid production skills. They slid between the genres effortlessly and haven’t looked back since.
Now, the Document One name is an institution of the Technique Recordings family, and the drum ‘n’ bass community as a whole. They’re regularly to be found tearing the roof off huge events in the UK, Europe, and beyond and each new release is eagerly anticipated by deejays and fans alike. And no wonder. With a sound that’s constantly being honed and developed to hit dancefloors even harder, the Doc One story has a lot more chapters left to go.
