Biografie
Originally from Australia and resident of the Netherlands since 1993, Dan Tuffy has been around. Back in Melbourne in the 80s, he was a founding member of popular psychedelic/folk cult group Wild Pumpkins at Midnight. Later he would become the driving force behind the eclectic rootsy trio Big Low (2002 – 2012) as well as being a founding member of one of the Netherlands most unique world music groups Parne Gadje and owner of independent label Smoked Recordings.
Songs from Dan, his debut solo album (idem artist name), is such a potent piece of work at this stage of his career that you could be forgiven for thinking of him as a 'late bloomer'. Not that he hasn't enjoyed some measure of success in the past; an ARIA award for Best Independent Album in 1988 in Australia, significant European tours in the 90's, independent airplay and killer reviews for pretty much every project he's been involved in this millennium. However, he has never really broken free of that 'musicians' musician' experience characterized by a handful of loyal fans, devoted critics in a few territories and a day job. A decent listen to this album would have to make you wonder why.
Songs from Dan is a sonic masterpiece of songwriting and storytelling that sits comfortably and unashamedly alongside classics delivered by, for example, Cave, Dylan or Waits. But there is no –copycat stuff going on here. Tuffy has either ignored his influences or absorbed them at a cellular level. It's unclear which, but his laments of lost love, dying cowboys, longing, self-loathing and betrayal are so unaffected and direct that they cannot help being anything but unique in their expression. This is what makes Songs from Dan, like all the great records you love, both personal and universal.
