Biografie
Kris Canavan was born in Northern Ireland in 1980 and graduated from university in 2004.
Since 2001, Canavan has used their body as a site to be manipulated, contorted, sculpted, pierced and mined for the creation of artworks.
They see the methods deployed in the creation of artworks (by utilising their body and it's resources) as a political ownership of their body, a rejection of the status quo and subservience that is expected of us by the state - essentially their works can be viewed as gestures of defiance and dissent.
Blunt trauma, bodily fluids and products, body piercing, surgical staples, loving embraces and numerous symbols have all been utilised to convey/relay the message.
From images containing metaphors for failure and futility to statements of love and through aktions of conflict and rage they have sought to make beautiful images that convey collective shame, social decay, loss, longing and the desire for a level playing field through ritualised aktion, self sacrifice and labour intensive durational works.
Presently Canavan is undertaking a period of research centring on the the use of bodily waste (piss and shit) in art, protest and philosophy and how through subversive acts, this matter can be weaponised.
