DJ Woody's rise through the ranks of the DJ World reads like an comedic underdog movie, shy British lad from a gritty working-class northern town follows his dreams until one day he finds himself stood in a boxing ring in San Francisco going head to head with the cream of the Worlds turntablist talent.
This was 11 years ago and of course the underdog wins but we'd need a few sequels to tell the rest of the story.
You'd have to include the 2nd World title, the US tour with indy hip hop hero Madlib and the time he was invited to DJ in the Bronx with the legendary Grandmaster Caz as his MC. You just couldn't make this stuff up!
Lee Woodvine aka DJ Woody is one of the Worlds most respected scratch DJ's and was described by the Scratch Perverts as "One of the most creative forces in DJing the UK scene has ever produced". Known for his innovations, he helped Vestax design the Worlds first ever musical turntable and even had DJ Qbert ask him how to do his signature 'Woodpecker' scratch. Although Woody's roots lay firmly with hip hop, musically his range spans alot wider than solely boom-bap rap. A typical DJ set can take in everything from party breaks and mash ups to hip hop, funk, disco or anything inbetween - 'it's just about using good music to creative a great vibe'.
Woody has worked with some of the industries most revered producers and artists, recording with the likes of Aquasky, Bomb The Bass and DJ Vadim and touring as the Russian Percussion, making up one quarter of the Ninjatunes supergroup One Self. He has written scratch music with a 25 piece big band orchestra, been tour DJ for Grammy winning hip hop star Mala Rodriguez, rocked festival crowds of up to 40 thousand and played in over 40 countries from The Nokia Theatre in Time Square to Bollywood film studio's in the middle of Mumbai.
In 2010 Woody again extended his repertoire in the form of his ground breaking audio-visual DJ show, 'Turntables In Technicolor'. Designing and animating all the material himself Woody immediately made his mark on the AV scene and following a jaw dropping showcase for the 2010 World DMC Finals at the Shepherds Bush Empire he would take the show across Europe, Canada, China, India and the US. The shows broad appeal led to a support slot for Manchester legends The Happy Mondays and even a bespoke performance for the BBC's hit kids TV show The Slammer.
Continuing to cause huge waves his video remix featuring Hollywood star Anne Hathaway was discussed, blogged and tweeted Worldwide by the likes of BBC Newbeat, Scott Mills, Tommy Lee (Mötley Crüe), NME and Glamour Magazine. Anne herself even passed comment on the video at London's 'One Day' movie premier!
2012 saw 'mixtape' releases with UK rap luminary and Foreign Beggars affiliate Dr Syntax, a boogie inspired remix for Danish popstars Private and a much lauded DJ mix for Tokyo Dawn Records. The latter achieving "Mix of the Week' on both MTV and Okayplayer (The Roots) websites.
Woody also unleashed his new audio-visual show to a rapturous full house at London's XOYO. 'DJ Woody's Big Phat 90s' is a nostalgic chronological ride through some of the decades 'phattest' moments. Recently described as 'mind-blowing' by veteran DJ and writer Billy Jam in his feature for Amoeba Records, Woody continues to create that feel-good 90's house party vibe at each performance. Tour highlights have so far included Canada's awesome Shambhala festival, Beatherder with the Utah Saints, a sellout doubleheader with DJ Yoda and an invitation to support Beardyman's homecoming Brighton gig.
With his first Australian tour booked, new mix releases scheduled, a production and live project in the works and even a theatre production in development, 2013 is already looking like a very busy and productive year for this unlikely Lancashire lad!
